An air pistol is a type of gun that uses either the power of compressed air, a compressed spring or gas under pressure. The following describes the four primary types of Air Pistols that we use. Spring Air Pistols: These type of pistol use your own strength to compress a spring, which draws back a piston into the action of the gun. The piston is held back by a sear mechanism attached to the trigger. Air is drawn into the chamber in front of the pistol through the transfer port. When the trigger is squeezed, the sear is released and the spring pushes forward the piston. This compresses the air in the cylinder and the air then escapes through the transfer port into the breech behind the pellet. The pellet is forced from the breech down the barrel at high speed until the pellet leaves the muzzle. Spring pistols can vary considerably in price. The most common being the break barrel or under-leaver type. Webley and HW both produced what is termed 'Over-Lever' cocking pistols such as the HW45 Below are some examples of Spring Powered Air Pistols Weirauch HW 70 Break Barrel Spring Pistol Gamo Falcon, Underlever Spring Pistol Weirauch HW45 Over-lever Spring Pistol Webley Tempest Over-Lever Spring Pistol Co2 Gas Powered Pistols: These pistols use Carbon Dioxide (co2) gas that is liquefied and stored under pressure in a metal gas cylinder. Most of the pistols that use co2 are very detailed copies of real Fire Arms. Most of these pistols, like the real pistols they copy are multi-shot pistols, either revolvers or automatic types. Some even have blowback action that enhances the authenticity of the pistol and even gives the feel of recoil. These multi-shot pistols are very low powered with a power output of usually less than 2.0 ft/lbs ME, compared to even low powered air rifles. Some are single shot and are very close to the UK Power limit (for pistols) of 6ft/lbs Muzzle Energy. These higher power pistols tend to be single shot and are used for longer range target shooting and plinking. Pest controllers often carry these types of pistol for the despatch of vermin species caught in traps. Just a note in the UK the Legal Maximum Power limit for Air Rifles is 12ft/lbs Muzzle Energy. For some reason most Co2 pistols and Revolvers have quite a heavy trigger pull. Examples of Co2 Powered Pistols The Crosman 357-6 Co2 10 shot Revolver Walther CP99 8shot Co2 Pistol Colt 45 (Dark Opps Version) 8shot Co2 Pistol Smith & Wesson 586 10shot Revolver Pre Charged Pistols: PCP as they are affectionately known, use a cylinder or air that is held under pressure. These cylinders are pressurised or filled by either a pump such as a stirrup pump or compressor, or they can be filled using air from a standard divers bottle (which is filled in a similar way). The PCP pistols are usually very 'high end' and are used for serious competition target shooting such as the Olympic Games etc. These pistols are usually very light and generally much more accurate than a shooter is capable of. They tend to be very high in price. Some costing over £1000! The advantage of these pistols is that almost everything is adjustable from the balance of the weight distribution to the trigger pressure. Most shooters find the main attraction of PCP's is that there is no recoil, thus making it easier to keep the pistol on target when firing. PCP's can be both single and multishot. Examples of the High End PCP Pistols Steyr LP-50 Recoiless Target PCP Walther LP300 High end PCP Rohm Trainer (also available as a Co2 powered Pistol) Pump up Pneumatic Pistols: As the name suggests, these are Pistols that require the shooter to operate some form of Lever to Pump air into a chamber. The Air is Compressed by either 1 or more pumps of the lever and when the trigger is squeezed, a hammer falls on a pin that pushes open the cylinder valve so that air escapes down the barrel, pushing the pellet along its way. These Pistols also have no recoil, which makes them a an ideal introductory to intermediate level Bullseye Target Pistol. Prices of these vary but are usually within budget for a beginner who wishes to start in the target pistol sports. Examples of Single Stroke Pump up Target Pistols.
